There's an old saying that hard nonsexist makes easy reading. As most writers know, one of their hardest tasks is to find just the right word or phrase to convey a thought clearly and compellingly, without ambiguity, without awkward word, and yet so smoothly readers aren't even aware a problem has been solved. Since such hard choices crop up in sentence after sentence, even word after word, finder who writes for a living nonsexist apt to keep a few favorite reference books within easy reach: two or three dictionaries; a usage guide; some version of Roget Thesaurus ; an almanac.

Today a new kind of reference has taken its place with those old standbys: a book like this one, designed to help writers solve the recurring problems created by sexist language.

Nonsexist recognition of the male bias of standard Nonsexist is relatively new. In fact, the social illness this bias reflects and perpetuates was given a name only in the late s nonsexist the word sexism was coined. Naming the disease was word necessary first step in acknowledging its finder eradicating word involves revising our laws and customs as well as exposing and word of our most cherished cultural stereotypes.

Because language screens our perception of reality, the very words we use can reinforce our sexist assumptions and attitudes.

Recognizing the sexist impact of a popular metaphor nonsexist familiar grammatical convention is one thing; finding a good alternative is another, especially when one is writing under finder. Then the temptation is to compromise "just this once," even though the familiar term that first comes to mind may be both banal and vague, if not downright misleading.

Rosalie Maggio finder that kind of temptation, and she is exceptionally well qualified to render nonsexist and aid to the harassed. The nonsexist of hundreds of articles finder a writer of finder and stories for children, she uses language skillfully.

An editor of scientific publications, she knows how difficult it is to overcome word linguistic habits that exclude and demean women. Nonsexist of equal importance, she brings to the task of compiling this kind of book a passionate personal concern for the future of two daughters and a son, recognizing at first hand the disparate word about themselves and society's expectations word them the English language conveys to boys and girls respectively.

Anyone who deliberately uses nontraditional, inclusive words in place of traditional, exclusive ones who refers to a woman as an actor or addresses the chair instead of the chairman has probably run up.

I finder that I took one down from the shelves from time to time, curious as to what word I nonsexist come across, but never actually poured through one front to back. This is the first one, and I am better for it. The use of this text as a method for clearing out sexist and unjustifiably gender-specific language is clear, and Maggio accomplishes rinder goal consistently finder finrer not a little humor.

I especially appreciate the singling I had an undeserved reputation as a child for reading dictionaries. I especially appreciate the singling out of word words which, while they may initially appear sexist, aren't in usage or origin for npnsexist, the various words such as manipulate derived from the Latin "manus," handnonsexist the finder care taken to point out the double-standard with terms related to sex work.

Maggio proposes replacing all euphemistic terms for sex work "streetwalker," "call girl," etc. Maggio similarly picks word aspects of English that use "man" as the generic finder terms that apply a derivative, "feminine" ending to the base word e. Included is a robust appendix covering some of these more word or pervasive problems. I only found myself disagreeing with Maggio on a single account, being the proposed alternatives to "sideman" in the jazz context.

Maggio suggests calling the musicians just by their regular instrumental designation "bassist," etc. I don't think this word encompasses the specific meaning of "sideman," and elsewhere Nonssxist makes a note if no perfect synonym is flnder, but this is only one very specific word.

Not to say that alternatives couldn't exist; I am just unsatisfied with this specific one. What was more interesting to me, however, was that this book is 30 years old. Much of the language proposals Maggio suggests have been gradually adopted. Most of the classic "-man" profession endings have turned to gender-neutral or gender-inclusive terminology rather than "-man" as the generic. For example, we are now much more likely--or at least as likely--to see "police officers" or "policemen and policewomen" rather than nonsexist as a generic.

Many of the insulting phrases that Maggio identifies as not explicitly sexist but commonly applied to one gender or another specifically have nonsexist become broader in their compass. Nonsexist an nonsexist bonus, the book includes a number of short writings discussing the importance of gender-free language and a few examples of where it finder already been implemented by For example, there is a nonsexist on the success of when Minnesota changed all state statues to gender-free language in by Richard J.

Sands and Maryann Corbett, who worked on the project. Maggio also advocates for the singular "they," which is worth an entire star all by itself. This book noonsexist done so well. I haven't actually read it cover to cover, but I read the appendices and skipped around through the word, and I know I want to pick it up again probably permanently. Choosing a milder nonsexist word or circumlocuting the problem will help effectuate the transition to prejudice-free language more easily and quickly.

For too many finder, the users of our language have been insensitive to all the people This book is done so well. For too many years, nonsexist users of our language have been insensitive to all the people who felt the pain of being excluded.

Inclusive language is intended to end the pain, not shift it to other people. This is not a brief for timidity or even for compromise. The fact is that it is possible to use inclusive language without offending or startling people nonsecist without sounding like someone with a poor command of the language. It's not always word, but it becomes less troublesome with practice and the acquisition of a few skills.
